Running versus Walking

by Maddison Tobin

Did you know that the healthiest conscious thing you can do for your body is walk?

According to Scott Robertson writing in
www.alive.com, walking three times a week is better for your body than running or lifting weights.

As a form of exercise, walking is safe and offers a host of long term health benefits. In fact, about the only way to injure yourself is by tripping,” said Robertson. "Some of the benefits of walking include lower blood pressure, lower risk of osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease; an improved cholesterol profile; fat loss; and a chance to clear your mind and lift your spirits."

Running is hard on the body. Runners have a greater risk of injury such as sprains, strains, blisters, and spurs. Running is very hard on joints.

“Consequently, studies show the drop out rate from running programs over a two year period is 50 per cent or more for running, compared to only 20 percent or less for walking,” said Robertson.

Although walking is healthier for your body than running, there are some benefits of running too. Those who run rather than walk have a fitness advantage. They are using energy quicker, therefore cutting exercise time almost in half. Another advantage is that is raises your heart rate faster. Especially for younger adults, walking doesn’t raise their heart rate so running is more efficient cardiovascular fitness exercising.
