A Thought for Today

Family Prayer

In the year 1961 the newspapers of United States published a portion of a radio broadcast by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. In the broadcast he said, " If there is hope for the future of America, if there is to be peace and happiness in our homes, then, we, as a nation, must return to God and the practice of daily family prayer."

He continues, "Can we have international peace without morality? Can we build homes without God, or have worthy parents who do not know and practice his teachings? Our nation is sadly in need of a rebirth to the simple life - a return to days when God was a part of each household, when families arose each morning with a prayer on their lips, and ended the day by gathering together and placing themselves in his care."

He pointed out "that democracy was built on a firm faith in God. As our nation grew and prospered, as it overcame vicissitudes and adversity its people never lost faith in a personal God. Our generation it seems has allowed old faithful religious practices to slip into oblivion. As a result family life has been weakened and our nation has suffered."

"A godless house is built upon the sand. It is an inviting, breeding ground for moral decay and crime. My faith for the future is predicated upon faith in God, which is nurtured in the family."

If J. Edgar Hoover is right, and I believe he is, we must hasten to return to prayers, which can be heard by a merciful God, and, perhaps hearing our prayers, he will forgive our sins and stretch forth his mighty arm to stop our downward plunge into anarchy.
