Eating Healthier
by Jackie McMurtrey

There are 10 ways that experts say can help you live a healthier life. All in all, this means a good combination of the right foods with the right calories, gradually changed/added to your current diet can and will help you live a healthier life.

1.) Nutrient-rich foods: Ideally, you should all eat a balance of foods from each of the main food groups to ensure that you get the best combination of essential nutrients from various foods every day.

2.) Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains: each day you should eat 2-4 servings of fruits, 3-5 servings of vegetables and 6-11 servings of whole grains,; combined these servings help you maintain a healthier diet.

3.) Maintain a healthy weight: this is different for everyone. Your body mass index will help you know your ideal weight and will be different based on your sex, height, age and even hereditary factors.

4.) Eat moderate portions: moderate portions allow you to eat more of the foods you like to eat.

5.) Eat regular meals: it is important to keep a regular schedule for your meals to prevent over-hunger and over-eating.

6.) Reduce, don’t eliminate certain foods: you don’t have to give up the foods you like but you need to adjust your diet so that you consume less of the foods that aren’t as good for you.

7.) Balance your food choices over time: if you eat a food high in one ingredient (like salt) balance it out the next day by eating foods low in that ingredient.

8.) Know your diet pitfalls: log what foods you eat for at least three days and acknowledge the ones you eat a lot of, and try to cut them back but not out of your diet and try to increase the foods that you are lacking.

9.) Make changes gradually: you will not have change overnight and it will take time to establish large changes to your new lifestyle of eating healthy.

10.) Remember, foods are not good or bad: choose foods based on your entire eating pattern, not by what is deemed good or bad and eat the foods you may feel guilty for in moderation.
